Zcash uses zk-SNARK proofs to make transactions selectively private — addresses can be transparent (T-addresses) or shielded (Z-addresses), and transactions between two shielded addresses ("z-to-z") hide sender, recipient, and amount. This is the original "selective transparency" privacy model, and it remains a strong technical design for customers who want zero-knowledge proofs as their privacy primitive.

In practice, Zcash adoption has been smaller than Monero's despite a comparable or stronger privacy primitive — partly because shielded sends require slightly more proof-generation time on the wallet side, partly because transparent T-addresses dominated early-era usage and many wallets default to T.
