Subaddress (Monero)
Short definition
A unique single-use Monero address derived from a master view/spend key — each invoice gets its own.
Subaddresses are Monero's mechanism for receiving payments to multiple distinct addresses without exposing your master address. Each subaddress is derived from your master view/spend keys and looks completely uncorrelated on-chain — third parties can't tell that two different subaddresses belong to the same wallet. Modern Monero wallets generate a fresh subaddress for every incoming payment by default.
For offshore hosting customers, subaddresses are how Monero payment is integrated into checkout: each invoice gets a fresh subaddress, eliminating the privacy leak of address reuse and making invoice tracking trivial for the merchant. Confirmation is the same 10-confirm window as ordinary Monero transactions. SilentHosts uses subaddress-per-invoice via self-hosted BTCPay.
