Bitcoin payment for hosting is one of those features that sounds optional and ends up being mandatory. Card processors regularly suspend offshore-hosting merchants on a whim; PayPal is consistently hostile; SEPA works for EU customers but not globally. No third-party processor sits between the customer and the merchant; the BTCPay instance is owned and operated by us, with the keys on cold storage and a cron job that sweeps to a separate hot wallet for accounting.
Lightning is the right choice for invoices under roughly $200 — fees are sub-cent and confirmation is instant. On-chain BTC makes more sense for larger invoices where the on-chain fee is dwarfed by the invoice total. Both options are presented at checkout; the customer picks per invoice.
